Empowering Ohioans: Severe Weather Preparedness and Recovery Resources
Severe Weather Information for Consumers
The Ohio Department of Insurance has a Severe Weather Toolkit to help Ohioans be safer and more financially prepared when severe weather strikes and more familiar with how to navigate the recovery process.
On the right side of the page, the Disaster Preparation and Recovery Toolkit download is available. This information will assist with the recovery and claim-filing process with their insurance company.
Below are a few tips for filing an insurance claim:
-
Immediately document your losses before removing debris. Take photos and videos.
-
Call your agent or insurance company and initiate claim filing. Incorrect or incomplete information will delay the process.
-
Gather the necessary paperwork and receipts to provide to your insurer. Consider everything before claim submission, and back it up with written estimates.
-
Consider making temporary repairs but don’t endanger yourself.
-
If required to seek temporary housing, check your policy for "loss of use" coverage.
-
Keep copies of all correspondence.
Ohioans with insurance questions and concerns can reach the Ohio Department of Insurance at 800-686-1526, via email at consumer.services@insurance.ohio.gov, and on our website at insurance.ohio.gov/consumers.
Contractor Fraud Information
After a damaging storm, such as a tornado, flood, or hail storm, home repair contractors often go door-to-door offering roofing, siding, and repair services. While a majority of contractors are reputable, there are unscrupulous home repair contractors that prey on Ohioans who are anxious to get their property and lives back in order. Visit our website for more information about contractor fraud, and download our informational Contractor Fraud brochure.
Insurance Fraud Information
Insurance fraud is the intentional submission of a false or deceptive statement to an insurance company for financial gain. If you suspect someone has committed insurance fraud, contact the Ohio Department of Insurance immediately at 800-686-1527, email ODI.Fraud@insurance.ohio.gov, or report fraud directly online. For additional information, download the ODI Insurance Fraud booklet.
